Usually when I stop the car they either run off or take to the sky in a squeaking panic. But this one just kept making little "peep" sounds like it was giving orders, or calling a cadence like a drill instructor. I fired off a couple of shots and was about to drive off when I saw a ball of fur running full speed down the drainage ditch... It suddenly made sense why the Killdeer wasn't flying away.

The most awkward looking, adorable thing I think I've ever seen (other than our granddaughter). The baby Killdeer was bouncing its head up and down trying to be so grown up. And the legs on it! Most of the birders I know have seen them and talk about them like they are just "so cute". I've seen quite a few baby birds and they are actually pretty ugly little things. This guy, though, was just so adorable!

I watched him run around for a bit then moved on down the road. Nothing much else to see that day. A pair of Kestrels that are always on one of the traffic signs were there. Lots of Red-Winged Blackbirds and Starlings.

And even more Eastern Meadowlarks.

This is the place I saw my first Eastern Meadowlark earlier this year. This one, though, was pretty big and fat compared to others I've seen. Wish I could have gotten a closer shot, but a departing plane scared him off of the fence and back into the grass.

Mt. Comfort airport is a great place to stop by for a few birds and some photos, but not for the scenery!

If you get the chance, you should check it out. From there it is only about 15 minutes to another good spot.
